1. - Context Is Everything

In the second episode of season four belonging to the prestige TV-series Succession, the four main characters visit a bar to discuss a business deal. This is how it all started, okay? We're getting to the alcohol in a minute.

Truth to be told: I love Succession, but haven't watched it in its fullest (YET), because every character is wonderfully constructed - and by that I mean as cringy as it could possibly get, which makes it hard to watch for me at times. And I say that as a person who is cringy! In public! On purpose!

However, the scene I just mentioned - bar and all - was actually very, very interesting. Yes, obviously for plot and character purposes, but also for my terribly mis-focused brain latching onto unnecessary details.

Let's talk about The Bar Scene in Succession's episode The Rehearsal beginning 27:43 in chronological order:

  1. The four siblings (Connor, Kendall, Roman and Shiv) enter a bar. They talk about Connor's failing relationship. Connor orders a Belgian Weißbier.
  2. Kendall excuses himself to take a very important phone call.
  3. Cut - The siblings are all sat down. Kendall comes to the table with the words What did I miss?.
  4. Cut - Connor's wheat beer lacks a head (the white crown of foam on top of a beer).
Here's a GIF to show what I mean with point (4):

The direct cuts as well as the connecting dialogue elements make it clear that this scene is supposed to regarded as chronological and without any left out breaks. And because I love explaining little details in universe, this somehow sparked several questions in me:
  1. How long does it take for the head of a Belgiean Witbier to succumb?
  2. Can we thus judge the beer that Connor would have in front of him? (I'm a Hater)
FUN-FACT! Connor may order a Belgian Weißbier, but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, because Weißbier isn't Belgian at all, instead German. The Belgian form of Weißbier is called Witbier (and differs from the German form in some aspects, but it's also a blonde beer made from wheat). Here's video evidence of that too:

It is actually relatively important for us to know that he has a witbier in front of him, because the head of a witbier is generally a bit smaller (which becomes a bit more important later on). Nevertheless, I love the scene, because Connor is such a snob, he doesn't even know what he's ordering XD it's so in character, I hope this was intentional!

Anyways, back to business!
Because it did interest me how long a head can exist on a beer and if it's plausible for Connor's head to have already died when Kandall comes back, I started an experiment.

2. - How To Test The Strength Of Your Beer Head

What you'll need: Now that you have set up the worst conditions possible (only allowing very approximate calculations), you may start pouring the beer, unpractised as you are. Then you start the stopwatch and wait for it to look like Connor's beer in the second GIF.

And the answer to the most unbearingly interesting question of all time is...

... circa four minutes. Keep in mind that the Weißbier head is a bit bigger but also, that the glass is not ideal to pour beer in, thus potentially diminishing the head. So, let's say four minutes is an plausible time for a beer head to exist, does Kendall's absence justify the lack of one upon his return?

Luckily for us, we can determine Kendall's time in the important business call with another stopwatch, since it was shown fully on screen, leaving Connor and the rest of the siblings waiting at the table for circa two minutes and 26 seconds. If we take the four minutes of beer head existence into the frame, we can conclude that Connor's beer has no right looking like that! Where is the white foam, Connor? Where is the white crown a beer is supposed to have? Huh? What d'ya do with it? TELL ME!!!

But, like, if Connor Roy's endeavours into beer drinking were your only concerns, then I hope I could deliver. I hope you had a nice time in this half-assed essay and I hope your day is going to be good. As always: Drink responsibly and never drink & drive. If you believe that you might have a drinking issue: Here's a link.
Have a good day!
P.S.: He holds his red wine glass wrong at his own wedding party ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

Something that became apparent to me relatively soon after puring a third of a liter into a glass was that I had just poured a third of a liter into a glass. And here's the thing: You can't store beer like a half-eaten yoghurt in the fridge, because the carbonation of the beer is what makes it taste good (and according to Le Chatelier the reaction in a chemical equilibrium with more gaseous particles occurs more frequently if the pressure is reduced.)

So what do I do? I drink the beer.

And here's 3 facts about me:

  1. I drink half a glass of wine maybe once ever 6 months.
  2. I had not eaten much that day.
  3. I was so fucking tipsy because of one beer.
It felt so weird drinking alcohol a) while still watching Succession b) alone and c) out of an IKEA glass at my desk. Another fun fact: my parents always emphasised that alcohol should only be drunk with good company to a nice meal, so disregarding that completely absolutely destroyed my world view (kinda. I did recover in the end.). Fuck, I even brushed my teeth afterwards. (And my parents laughed at me for having a stick up my ass XD)

4. - Shitfaced Postface

So, after we all had our fun during this essay, I just wanted to the rest that has stayed thus far:

Alcohol is not a drug that is to be taken lightly. The amount of people dying while intoxicated either due to a reduced attention span or hubris is higher than most would like to admit. If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction or might spot certain patterns in their own behaviour you should know that asking for help isn't shameful, instead it's one of the bravest things one could do. Local addiction hotlines are likely to be 24/7, and they will know how to help you.

I hope you had fun! The list will get updated in 6-9 months, so the next time I'll drink something. Have a good day :D

P.S.: If you have any nice pictures of glasses, send them to me :o, i'm interested in things like that! And as always, remember:
